Vernon was born in Fort Worth on Aug. 31, 1950, to Elvin Claude and Miriam McQueen Wells.
A man with a sense of humor, Vernon loved to joke and tease. He loved to cook and his early adulthood, after a stint in the U.S. Army as an air traffic controller in Korea, was spent in catering and the food industry. However, the job he has loved the most was the last 10 years working for TXDOT. He enjoyed the camaraderie with all the folks there, where he was known as "Pops." The family is grateful to all of them for their support and encouragement during his illness.
Vernon also enjoyed music and playing the guitar. He shared this love with his brother, Jerry, and they spent lots of time playing together. Vernon was also in the handbell choir at Burleson First United Methodist Church. He was an Everman Bulldog and kept up with many friends from his school years through Facebook. They all gave him support and encouragement through the last months and he took great pleasure in communicating with them.
With his daughter Meredith, Vernon shared a love of the Dallas Stars and Texas Rangers. They would text back and forth during games sharing excitement or dismay. Every time the Stars scored he would roar "score" with great delight.
Most of all, he was a loving husband and father who cared deeply for his immediate and extended family members. He enjoyed visiting with his cousins, and we thank Donna for all the strength and love she has given. He was extremely proud of his children, Justin and Meredith, and supported them in all their activities. We will miss him terribly.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Boren Wells; son, Justin Samuel Wells; daughter, Meredith Anne Wells and husband, Andrew Pruett; brothers, Gerald Wells and wife, Karen, and Charlie Wells; and a host of other relatives.
